Managing Workplace Stress - A Christian Perspective

'He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.'   Isaiah 40:29-31 (NIV)

Work related stress continues to be a significant cause of illness and disease and is known to be linked with high levels of sickness absence, staff turnover and other indicators of organisational underperformance, including human error, within the UK.

By the term 'work-related stress' we mean the process that arises where work demands of various types and combinations exceed the person’s capacity and capability to cope.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, stress, depression or anxiety affected over 435,000 people and was a major contributor to the 28.5 million work days lost in 2010.

In response to this Transform Work has produced a booklet by Dr Adrian Miles, that focuses primarily upon managing workplace stress and suggests that it is not necessarily the pressures that we encounter in the workplace which cause us stress, but rather how we manage them.

The 12 page A5 booklet considers the management of stress from a Christian perspective and answers the questions:

  • Is stress a product of today’s modern world?
  • Why should we be concerned about stress?
  • What do we need to consider when attempting to manage our stress level?
  • What can we do about the pressures of life?
    ?
It then goes on to describe:
  • Some real life coping responses to pressure
  • Advice from the Scriptures
  • A Christian's responsibility to others
  • Leadership roles
  • Practical steps

The booklet is ideal for Christians in the workplace, as well as for Christian groups and management teams who want to help their colleagues and employees deal with stress and its impact on work and everyday life.
