If you were setting up a network of individuals who could perhaps join us all I think that would be good. Alternative pathway – you could get pastoral support into your workplace. So that at 2.15pm on a Tuesday when you’re not sure what you’re supposed to be doing there’s someone to e-mail, talk to, and turn to. Even in the Ambulance service there is a lot of down time even though we’re busy stations.
It’s important to realise as well the effect of unsocial working hours. Three or four o’clock in a morning… one lady sat in a car on your own it can be lonely so if we’re able to set up a network where at three or four in the morning you can text, call others who are switched on and are available- that would be great.
So if you’re talking about transforming the workplace that’s a really small start for those that do shift work. There are a lot of people who are sat on their own at all sorts of times and they have all sorts of thoughts running through their heads maybe in the context of our work – you’ve just had to scrape a child out from under a bus and where do you go. Yes there are offers of counselling and procedures in place that’s supposed to protect you, but it’s very difficult to access those and hold your head up and there’s still the pressure of the profession that says you should be used to it go on and get on with it – get over it move on… and that’s not entirely appropriate and if people are wondering what to do with their faith, especially new in their faith, and they don’t know how to react or if they should react or they want to be a better witness than they are, or if they are just not sure about what to say do think or feel at that time... where’s their support? At the moment it’s not possible to access other people in those situations who are Christians. A text based network or e-mail network available 24/7 would be a start.
