UKparliamentInfluencing Policy Makers

It is a vital ministry strategy to proclaiming with unity and clarity Christian values concerning the workplace by working with the media and influencing policy makers.

It is encouragingly reported that there are more Christians in Parliament today than at any previous time in the last 80 years, and in my last visit to the Palace of Westminster I experienced an anticipatory sense of a ‘tipping-point’ having been reached – as though goodness could once again be popular, and interference to this nations historic, underpinning Christian moral compass was being curtailed.

Transform Work UK wrote to a number of Christian MPs with an offer to meet and brief on issues facing workplace Christians today and the part that policy makers and people of influence can play.

I met with four MPs, all with a hunger to see our faith flourish in the places where we work. Two in particular were very willing to offer their presence and influence to the ministry of Transform Work UK. With all we discussed the regulatory context of our Christian faith and practice in the workplace, and the need to encourage employers within the diversity agenda. This latter topic lends itself to some form of voluntary code by which organisations can assure and validate themselves in relation to matters of faith.

I am very grateful to those MPs who regarded our time together as important and to those pressing ahead with actions resulting from those meetings. My particular thanks and sincere appreciation go to
- The Rt. Hon. Caroline Spelman, Secretary of State for DEFRA and MP for Meriden
- The Rt. Hon. Stephen Timms, Shadow Minister for Employment, MP for East Ham and Labour’s Vice Chair for Faith Groups
- Roger Gale MP for North Thanet
- John Glenn, MP for Salisbury.

Please, when you pray for ‘those in authority’ (1 Tim 2:1-2), include these Westminster servants.
