Case Studies from Momentum 09

Portfort Halstead Christian Fellowship
David is an engineer. He considers his workplace, although a hard place to be a Christian, an important mission field. The evidence is that he has joined the workplace Christian group that meet regularly and prays together. The group put on carol events as a service to the company. David is now interested in workplace alpha and also in Operation Christmas Child as a result from chatting with the TWUK team. When asked, ‘Why do you go to your Christian workplace group?’ his reply was, ‘any opportunity to read the bible and pray is helpful!’

David is part of a ‘regular’ CWG where the company has 3.5 thousand staff, on his site are 1000 and a regular 10 attend the CWG. TWUK are keen to support and work along side this group to encourage and grow their influence and impact amongst their colleagues and in the work they do.

Christian Medical Fellowship  www.cmf.org.uk
Laura is a medic and already part of a thriving Christian Professional Group. She chose this career because it fulfilled her gifting and also because of the career path and salary. She also felt called to this career as there is lots of mission opportunity overseas. Laura considers her workplace to me an important mission field and the evidence is clear as she has found other Christians within her profession to pray with and has been involved in workplace alpha, carol and Easter events.

Susanna is a doctor and part of CMF. She said the hardest place for her to live, as a Christian is at work which is why she’s found support in the professional group CMF. She prays weekly with others for her work and colleagues and together has put on a Carol Service at Christmas time.

Armed Forces Christian Union  www.afcu.org.uk
Mike is already well established in AFCU and thus has already been part of a Christianity Awareness week. He considers his workplace to be an important mission field.

Faith Matters
Elsie has a career is social work and simply ‘fell’ into this work because of her gifting. Although she finds is harder to live as a Christian at work than any other part of her life, she sees it as an important mission field. She has got Christian support around her from meeting bi-monthly together with a workplace group called Faith Matters. Since speaking with the TWUK team at Momentum she is keen to explore the possibility of Operation Christmas Child at work and also keen to put on a Carol Service.

Christian Aid Prayer Group
Becky works in admin for Christian Aid. She has got to know other Christians in her workplace and they have prayed together sometimes and is keen to establish a stronger regular prayer group within Christian Aid as a result of chatting with the TWUK team. She hadn’t viewed her workplace as an important mission filed but now wants to know more and how she, within a group, can reach out and serve her workplace for Christ. There are lots of hurting people there and in the absence of a chaplain the Christian group could be a good support.

Teaching
Lucy is a teacher at a Church of England school and went into this work for a career. She finds her social and leisure time the hardest to be a Christian with her workplace as a close second. Lucy knows of other Christians in her workplace and they meet together in the Christian Union. Through this means they have been involved in Operation Christmas Child. There is also a chaplain in her school.

Teaching
Roger is a teacher and went into this profession for the career. He finds living the Christian life the hardest at work rather than in social or home time. Although he knows other Christians in his workplace they do not meet together for support or to pray for work even though Roger considers work to be an important mission field. He hadn’t heard of the Christian Professional Group for teachers called Association of Christian Teachers until he met with the TWUK staff on the TWUK stand at Momentum. He has through school put on Easter and Christmas events.

Apprentice Engineer
Stuart has chosen a career in engineering at is currently an apprentice. He hasn’t found any other Christians in his workplace and thus doesn’t meet with anyone for prayer, although he finds living as a Christian the hardest at work as apposed to social or home time. He doesn’t consider his work to be an important mission field but after chatting with the TWUK team at Momentum is keen to find out more about putting on a carol event.

Student Midwife
Lydia is a student midwife and went into this career to fulfil her gifting. She finds socialising and all that goes with the general student nurse life style a challenge to her Christian faith. She doesn’t know other Christians at work or in her profession and thus hasn’t had the opportunity to pray with others at work and for her work. She believes it is an important mission field and was thrilled to find out about the Christian professional group, Christian Nurses and Midwives. She ticked the box ‘tell me more’. TWUK team have already put Lydia in touch with CNM and are keen she is supported through that professional group.
