Finding God in The dental surgery

Dental Nurse

Interview with Lesley

What work do you do?
I'm a Dental Nurse

Did you always want to be a Dental Nurse?
No I started off in childcare and really enjoyed my training but when I got into full time work I didn’t like it. There was far too much paper work.

How did you come to work in Dentistry?
Well, I was unhappy in the work I was doing so I looked in the paper and discovered a trainee position going for a Dental Nurse and I just applied…

How would you describe you life when you started work at that dentist?
I was depressed and was going from one relationship to the next trying to find fulfilment and meaning to my existence.

Were there any Christians at your work?
When I started there I didn’t know of any Christians and I was really surprised when I was invited by my dentist to watch her perform in a dance group at her local church. It happened to be a guest service.

What made you go?
I was curious and knew I was searching for something and my colleague would say that she knows God loves me... and that stuck. Also my dentist was a really nice person and she was a lot more supportive than anyone else in my life at the time.

Did you know any other Christians at this time?
No

What none in your family or circle of friends?
No - I didn’t know any other people involved in my life who were Christians.

So what happened next?
Well, we had some interesting conversations at work and I got invited back to another guest service. I went, I guess, because of my growing friendship with my work colleague. This time though during the service I felt God was speaking to me directly and I found my hand going up in the air wanting to accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.

Who were you sat next to in the guest service?
I was sat next to my work colleague.

Wow – so this was on a Sunday when you got to work on the Monday what happened?
I walked into the office and the dentist gave me the biggest smile from ear to ear! It was brilliant. I felt so at peace for the first time and excited to see her at work.

So what did the other colleagues at work say?
They noticed a difference in me. I started attending church regularly and went on an Alpha course to learn more, and I guess my character was changing. Before I was often stressed and used to break down at a drop of a feather. So they saw a change in me, I was a lot calmer and at peace and they would comment on it.

Did anything change at work?

I guess I became content with my life and with where I was working, knowing that there is more to getting up going to work, coming home, eating and sleeping. God has changed my life around. I’m now married to a Christian guy and we’re about to expect our first child. God is amazing and I thank Him for putting me in that dentist surgery. My life has changed because a colleague at work showed me Jesus' love.
