Serving Swansea Council at Christmas

lady having the massage The Christian Union at Swansea County Council opened a Christmas Chill-out Zone for fellow employees for the third year running in 2008. Two qualified therapists gave free head and shoulder massages to a total of 26 people during the two hour session, including the Chief Executive of the Council who had been personally invited.

Our aim is to serve our colleagues and to give them something for nothing at Christmas. One of the group, in conjunction with her daughters and their friends, made over 60 Christmas crackers with three chocolates and a verse inside each one. These were given to all who attended the event and any left over were taken round the offices. It was great to see the verse stuck on the monitor of a colleague’s computer a few days later.

We held our Carol Service two days afterwards and it was an answer to prayer to see at the service a number of people who had come to the Chill-out Zone. We are praying for these people that God will make them think about Him as a result of our Christmas events.

Despite this being the third year of the event, it still really feels scary when the day comes round as we have no idea how many will turn up. At one point there were only people from the Christian Union in the room and it looked like a bit of a disaster but God had not let us down and colleagues soon started to come in. We had been reminded in the run up to the event of the lengths God goes to just to save one person, for example the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 9, and we felt that if one person took one step nearer to becoming a Christian as a result of the events then that was a great result.

As we reflect on the Christmas events and begin to pray about running an Alpha course later in the year we continue to hope that God will do more than we can ever hope or imagine in our workplace.
