Where do you work?

 

I work for a John Lewis store.

 

How long have you been there?

 

It will be five and a half years now.

 

You were telling me earlier that when you first became a Christian you were working in a factory but you decided to go into another job. Tell us about it and why you decided to do that.

 

I just felt like that a Christian should be doing a ‘Christian-type’ of job so I went into nursing and it was completely unsuitable for me and my temperament and everything you know – it was completely wrong.

 

So after nursing where did you go?

 

I’ve had various different jobs on my journey of life but I work as a sales assistant at this moment of time and I work in ladies fashions and I work with a team. I do things like bra fits and help people choose their shoes – it’s a nice little team of people to work with.

 

Do you enjoy your job?

 

Most of the time I enjoy my job but I don’t always like that it’s materialistic type of life style, promoting cloths, getting people to buy cloths. I find that difficult sometimes.

 

Do you mean as a Chrsitian you find it difficult?

 

It’s just that… I’m… well…. you just don’t know where these cloths are made you know that there’s lots of people in sweat shops somewhere and sometimes you are encouraging people to buy thing and they can’t afford it and they get into debt. BUT I’ve had opportunity to talk to the manager because after five years of working for John Lewis you get this honour of having an interview so they can congratulate you and whilst I was there I took the opportunity to ask about how ethical John Lewis is and what we were doing about recycling and environment issues. They are quite ethical in their trading where they source things and treat people well. So I felt a bit easier after that.
